Chat in a new language, with a cat who makes it easy

Chat with the cat about whatever's on your mind, in any of eleven languages — no plan, no page to fill, nothing to prepare beforehand. Say it however it comes out, and get a hand only when you ask for one.

The lightest way in

A journal page asks you to compose something, even a small something. Chatting doesn't ask for anything shaped at all — you just say whatever's on your mind, however it comes out, for as long or as short as you like. Talk about whatever you're actually curious about that day, not a topic handed to you — a film, a recipe, nothing in particular. There's no prompt you're answering and nothing to prepare: some days two sentences are the whole visit, and that's already enough.

None of it gets marked, either. Making a mistake is fine, mixing two languages in the same line is fine, changing your mind mid-sentence is fine — what matters is that you wanted to say something at all. She's never judging right or wrong, only ever suggesting, because language learning is the work of years, maybe a lifetime, not a single try — wanting to speak counts for more than getting it perfect. If you'd like it cleaned up, you ask.

What a conversation looks like

• Say whatever comes out. In the language you're learning, in your own, or both in the same message — nothing to reply to, no mode to switch.
• Not sure what to say back? Every reply comes with three ready-made lines in the language you're learning, with a quiet translation if you hover to check one. Tap one to drop it into the box, then edit it, add to it, or send it as it is.
• Ask the wand for a rewrite. Written something clumsy? One tap turns it into a proper sentence in the language you're learning, and the before-and-after gets saved to your journal on its own — you don't have to do anything else with it.
• Double-click a word, any word. Hers or yours, mid-conversation, for a quick meaning and a pronunciation. Want more than a quick look? One more tap saves it properly to your vocabulary.
• Hand her a photo. She'll write a line about it in the language you're learning — cheeky, soft, or plain, your choice — with the translation and a few new words alongside it, made into a little card.

That's the wand talking, more or less — she's not precious about how a sentence arrives, only about where it ends up.

Or switch to teach mode

Flip a toggle and the conversation changes shape. Teach mode explains things in your own language and corrects the way a patient person does: rather than handing you the fix straight away, she asks you to try again first, and only gives the answer outright if the second try still misses. Get it right and she moves you on to the next small thing to practise.

A photo, three ways

Hand her a picture and pick a mood: Kitty Roast for something cheeky, Aesthetic & Poetic for something soft, Chill & Basic for a plain, clean description to learn from. Whichever you choose, it comes back as a line in your language, its translation, and a couple of new words — small enough to read in a second, real enough to actually learn from.

Languages you can chat in

English, French, Spanish, German, Italian, Portuguese, Japanese, Korean, Russian, and Chinese — Simplified or Traditional. Eleven in all, and nothing stops you from mixing two of them in the same conversation.

Also in the same book

The chat sits in the same book as the journal — anything the wand rewrites, or a word you saved mid-conversation, turns up there too. Write a page when composing suits you better, shadow a sentence aloud to hear it back, or keep the words you've looked up in one place.
